Welcome

invest in the community

WHat is invest in the community?

Defund the police has been terribly branded, due to the branding it has led to misconceptions of the movement and our goals. This phrase has been turned into a buzzword that no longer has the ability to be authentically discussed. So we decided to tackle rebranding defund the police so that it conveys its meaning. We hope that our rebranding can reach out to everyone and encourage to learn more about this movement.

What is the meaning of defund the police?

Reducing the budget that police departments get and distributing it to different underfunded social services such as housing, education, health care, and child care.

Common misconceptions

  • Abolishing the police

  • Take away jobs

  • Makes the communities less safe

  • Being soft on crime, lenient pursuit of justice

  • Taking away all the funding from the police

  • Promoting unhoused and drug use

  • Since diversity exists in the police force, it does not need to be addressed/reformed.

  • There is an equal amount of policing in black neighborhoods

What we want to reform

  • Decrease the number of years for non-violent crimes.

  • Decriminalization I.E: Drugs like Marijuana

  • Reducing the number of police stations that get military gear.

  • Propose legislation that would remove obstacles to prosecuting police misconduct

  • Move to repeal the law that shielded bad cops’ records from going public

  • The legislation should allow those harmed by police to recover damages

  • Create a national registry to track misconduct so that rogue cops couldn’t move from department to department.

How do we fund our plans

All three levels of government — federal, state and local — contribute to the cost of police protection. But their contributions are far from equal. In 2015, local governments paid for more than two-thirds of police spending. The federal government came second at 20.4%, followed by state governments at 11%.

Misconceptions, Reform, and funding.

Our demands

Citizens

Public Institutions

- create public institutions (i.g: public transportation, public education, & public healthcare) open to all people

- supply materials to those institutions to increase their efficiency

- everyone will be given an equal chance in learning, be supported, and increasing quality of life

Foster Care, Child Care, and Family/Maternal/Parental Leave

- implement child care from Bernie which allows women to work without concerns about their child

- better pay for child care workers

Resources for the LGBTQ, Disabled, Immigrants, and more

- create resources for people with disabilities that have to pay outrageous amounts for insulin, diagnosis, medication or for wheelchairs/prosthetics, etc.

- resources to help when insurance won't (i.g: immigrants can't go to hospitals for proper healthcare because they can't afford it or it's too dangerous or gay men who cannot donate blood within a year of having intercourse with another man)

Youth Organizations

- establish more youth organizations with proper structures & resources to aid the youth, staff organizations for necessary youth support, provide leadership & educational opportunities for youth to learn and grow

- provide more vulnerable communities with resources so that youth can be prepared & confident for school

- promotes social change, helps the youth succeed and become more productive people in society

Educational Resources

- supply materials to schools for quality education create higher quality education such as private schools to support more children in schools through structures and teachers so class sizes are smaller and more personalized

- encourage innovation and creativity with more resources

- more equal education for vulnerable communities to help the socioeconomic gap between communities

Cities

Community-Based Justice Board

- restorative justice board that oversees the police cases and pays those on the board a stipend for their time

- reduces recidivism rates and creating meaningful dialogue

City Improvements

- funding for improving the cities and repairing damaged and unsafe structures such as public transportation and unstable roads
- fix, redesign, create antiterrorist designs, and make cities pandemic proof and more accessible
- prepare for the fourth industrial revolution and the reduction of carbon emissions

Climate Change

- funding in the climate change issue by investing in more types of energy sources, creating more initiative towards agriculture, forest, or land, and policing the companies that are significantly contributing to climate change
- increases the quality of air, water, and soil, creating cleaner energy sources, and reducing pollution

Homeless Shelter

- design, construct, and improve homeless shelters that are poor in quality, and unstable for those in need
- create more shelters, separate rooms, the allowance of animals, provision of meals, and mental health resources
- improving the maintenance of homeless shelters (better ventilation, cleaning, providing hygiene, and pandemic proof structures)

Services

First Responder Health Professionals

- We could create a team of first responder health professionals to get called to an overdose instead of the police.

Traffic Accident Specialization Department

- traffic accident specialization department that will hire and train people in the task force to handle traffic accidents

- purchase Traffic Accident Task Force cars, supply materials and equipment, and construct a building to house those who will work for this department
